The Estate has recently completed what was the fourth peatland restoration project to have taken place on Invercauld.
The work was carried out on the north-west side of Culardoch, a hill located about 5 miles north-east of Braemar (the water body in the photo is Loch Builg in Speyside).
As part of the process, diggers (with extra-wide tracks to minimise their impact on the soft ground) blocked a large number of old ditches, or ‘grips’, to improve water retention and reduce erosion of the peaty soil. Eroding peat is thought to be a key contributor to carbon emissions in Scotland so the hope is that blocking these grips will help a little in the ongoing battle against climate change.
The works were funded by a Cairngorms Peatland ACTION grant from the Cairngorms National Park Authority, a Peatland ACTION delivery partner which reports to the Scottish Government.
